Why Do I Need a Dental Crown?

There are several reasons why you might need to get a dental crown that are determined during a dental exam. If a tooth has been broken, weakened with worn down enamel, missing a necessary as part of a dental bridge, following a root canal, or to improve the look of a tooth after a dental implant procedure, you are a prime candidate for a dental crown. The best way to determine this is to simply make an appointment to see us today and the staff at River’s Edge Dental will figure out what’s best for your mouth.

What Are Dental Crowns Made Of?

Dental crowns can be made from four different types of materials. The most popular is all ceramic porcelain-based because this most closely matches the look and appearance of your natural teeth. The others are porcelain fused to metal, gold alloys, and base metal alloys. Our team will discuss these various options when you visit us to help determine which dental crown is best for you.

What Are The Steps Involved?

The process for getting a crown usually involves only a couple of trips to our office, especially if most of the tooth structure remains above the gum line and a root canal is not needed. The first appointment involves our dentist trimming the tooth to make room for the crown to fit comfortably. Next, the dentist will take impressions of your mouth for the crown. This involves them placing a tray with impression material onto the trimmed tooth and asking you to bite down on it until the material sets. Once this dries, the dentist then sends these impressions off to a dental laboratory to be made.
In the meantime, you will receive a temporary crown that is placed on your tooth until the final one comes in. It’s at the second appointment where our dentist will remove the temporary crown and fasten on the permanent one, making sure that it fits correctly before cementing it into place.

What Happens After A Dental Crown?

You may notice some light sensitivity after getting a dental crown. If you experience any issues when you bite down, the crown may need to be adjusted, something our dentists at River’s Edge Dental can easily do. As always, regular brushing and flossing will keep your gumline healthy and your crown in top working condition.
